What is a Barreled Action, and what are the benefits?

Posted by Red Hawk Rifles on Jun 10th 2024

Sometimes we encounter a term that feels really simple, but we have to make sure just in case it isn’t used the way we think it is. “Barreled action” is a perfect example of one of those terms you have to check out, just in case.

So we are going to go over a quick definition of what these are and why you should consider getting one.

Barreled Action Definition

According to ATF Ruling 93-2 “A barreled action consists of an action to which a barrel has been attached, usually by threading the forward portion of the action to receive the barrel.”

This usually applies to bolt action rifles but it can logically apply to any receiver or barrel combination that allows for the barrel to be screwed in. While it is not a complete gun, it still counts as a legal firearm.

Since it is a legal firearm, a this has to be shipped to an FFL or Federal Firearms Licensee if purchased online or transferred through a courier service.

Why Should You Get a Barreled Action?

The next thing to consider is why you should purchase one. There are three major aspects to this: Easier installation, properly fit parts, and better quality parts.

Easier Installation

The first aspect is that a barreled action comes already assembled. This makes it easier to put into your stock either by you or by your preferred gunsmith. This saves you time and hassle when building your rifle.

It also means your action won’t be shipped as a bundle of individual parts. This can make it harder to lose, but it really makes it more convenient to ship and to make sure all the parts are there.

Properly Fitted Parts

The next aspect is proper fitting of parts. Most suppliers will check to make sure that the barrel and action are properly fitted. This means that both pieces are within the proper specifications and are paired in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the parts.

Fine tuning and hand fitting parts for precision rifles can be an extremely detailed process that you may not be able to handle. Essentially a barreled action is an “out of the box” solution to properly fitted precision rifle parts.

This will mean you’ll pay a premium to get a barreled action, depending on the source and materials but it does make it easier to get a quality barrel/action fitment. Not everyone has a top tier gunsmith in their area, buying something that is already assembled makes it much more accessible to the individual and easier on the smith.

Better Part Quality

They also have better parts quality than mass manufactured options. You will often be able to choose what quality the action and barrel are in addition to things like caliber and finish (depending on the provider).

This makes the build more personal in addition to make sure you are getting your money’s worth. These types of rifles are often expensive and you wouldn’t want to take chances with something that has so much of your finances tied up in it.

Conclusion

These are a great way to get the actual heart of your rifle to you easier. You won’t have to hunt around for the perfect parts, buy them, and fit them yourself. Instead you can get it off the shelf and into your stock faster. If you’re in the market for a barreled action, we have a number of options with Defiance actions and Bartlein barrels available.
