Bartlein 6mm 5R barrel blank, 1:7.5 twist, in nine contours

The Bartlein .243 (6mm) stainless barrel blank is a 5R single-point cut rifled blank in 1:7.5 twist for a gunsmith to chamber, thread and crown. It covers .243 Win, 6mm Creedmoor, 6mm Rem, 6x47 Lapua and 6 PPC, and comes in nine Bartlein contours from the 3.6 lb #2B Medium Sporter to the 1.25" straight cylinder. Every blank leaves Bartlein 1" longer than its finish length so the muzzle can be cut and crowned.

One twist: 1:7.5

Every contour on this page is cut at 1:7.5, so the choice is contour and length only. Bartlein's one caution on 5R rifling is the short-jacket 65 to 68 gr varmint bullet, which it says does not shoot its best in 5R; it makes no such exception for longer bullets.

Single-point cut, 5R, hand lapped

Bartlein cuts every barrel single point, never button rifled, and hand laps each one at finish. 5R has five lands with a gentler land angle; Bartlein reports up to 5% less BC loss from jacket deformation in testing.

Bore .237", groove .243"

Bartlein's 6mm bore and groove dimensions, the same blank whether your gunsmith reams it for .243 Win, 6mm Creedmoor, 6mm Rem, 6x47 Lapua or 6 PPC.

Nine contours, 26" to 30"

Sporters (#2B, #3, #13), straight tapers (#7 MTU, #8 Light Varmint, #14 M24/M40, 1.25" straight cylinder) and Palmas (#11, #12). Breech diameters are 1.200" or 1.250"; Bartlein's standard-length weights run 3.6 lb to 9.3 lb.

Comes 1" long for the crown

Hand lapping leaves a slight bell mouth at both ends. Bartlein adds 1" to every blank so the gunsmith cuts a minimum of 1" off the muzzle when crowning; chambering takes care of the breech end.

This is a blank, not a finished barrel. It must be chambered, threaded, crowned and installed by a gunsmith. Rifle barrels and barreled actions ship for a flat $14.95 per order, regardless of quantity, and do not qualify for free shipping. Other Bartlein contours are available to order.

Fitting it and the fine print

Which twist do I order for 6mm Creedmoor or .243 Win?

Every blank on this page is 1:7.5, so there is no twist choice to make here. Bartlein lists .243 Win, 6mm Creedmoor and 6 PPC as its example cartridges for the .237" x .243" bore, and 6mm Rem and 6x47 Lapua use the same bore. Bartlein's one caution on 5R rifling is the short-jacket 65 to 68 gr varmint bullet: in its experience those group in the upper .2s to a flat .3, and boat tails in that weight range do worse, because the short bearing surface does not let the 5R lands bite well. That is the only exception Bartlein makes.

How long will the finished barrel be?

Bartlein makes every blank 1" longer than its finish length. Hand lapping leaves a slight bell mouth at the muzzle and breech, so a minimum of 1" comes off the muzzle when the gunsmith cuts and crowns it, and chambering removes the bell mouth at the breech. Order the length that suits your finished barrel plus that inch of muzzle stock, and confirm the final cut with your gunsmith.

Which contours take a suppressor?

Bartlein wants a minimum .700" muzzle diameter for a suppressor so the mount has enough shoulder to lock against, and prefers a Medium Palma or heavier barrel for it. On this page the #7 MTU (.930"), #12 Heavy Palma (.900"), #14 M24/M40 (.900"), #8 Light Varmint (.875"), #13 Rem Varmint/Sendero (.830"), #11 Medium Palma (.820") and the 1.25" straight cylinder all clear that. The #2B (.630") and #3 (.670") sporters do not.

What does the gunsmith need to do?

Everything that turns a blank into a barrel: chamber it for the cartridge you choose, thread the shank for your action, cut and crown the muzzle, and install it. The blank ships with none of that done. Bartlein does not allow fire lapping or abrasive bore compounds at any point; both void its warranty. Give the gunsmith the contour number and length from your order so the breech diameter (1.200" or 1.250") is known before any stock or chassis work.
