Overview
A cut-rifled .25 caliber match blank in the contour and twist your build needs
The Bartlein .25 caliber stainless barrel blank is a single-point cut rifled 5R match blank for a gunsmith to chamber, thread and crown for your bolt action. It is offered in five contours, 1:7 or 1:10 twist, and 26" or 28" lengths by contour. Any cartridge on the .25 bore can be chambered in it, from .25-06 Remington and .257 Roberts to .257 Weatherby.
Single-point cut rifled and hand lapped
Bartlein uses single-point cut rifling only, never a button, and hand laps every blank when it is finished. The .250" bore and .257" groove are Bartlein's standard .25 caliber dimensions.
5R rifling, five lands
Five lands means no land sits directly opposite another, and the land sides are angled instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the jacket distorts less on the jump into the rifling, and rates 5R at up to 5% less BC loss from jacket deformation.
Five contours available
The #3 Heavy Sporter, #7 MTU Straight Taper, #13 Varmint/Sendero, #14 M24/M40 and 1.25" Straight Taper, in your choice of 1:7 or 1:10 twist.
Two twists: 1:7 and 1:10
The 1:7 twist stabilizes the heavier .25 caliber bullets. The 1:10 twist favors the lighter end of the caliber. Pick the twist for the bullets you plan to run.
Ships 1" longer than the length you order
Bartlein makes every blank 1" over the chart length so the gunsmith can cut the bell mouth off the muzzle and crown it. Lengths on this page are 26" or 28" finished.

- Muzzle threads of 1/2x28, 5/8x24 or 3/4x24, cut by your gunsmith
Will not work with
- Any rifle as shipped: this is a blank, not a pre-fit or drop-in barrel
- Pre-fit or gas gun installs: Bartlein makes no pre-fit or gas gun barrels
Gunsmith fitting and a flat shipping charge. This blank must be chambered, threaded, crowned and installed by a certified gunsmith. Rifle barrels and barreled actions ship for a flat $14.95 per order regardless of quantity and do not qualify for free shipping.
Detail
Fitting it and the fine print
Which contour and length do I order?
Match the contour to the barrel channel of your stock or chassis and to the weight and profile you want to carry. Your gunsmith turns the shank to fit the action. Bartlein offers five contours here; other contours are available by special order.
The length you pick is the finished length. Bartlein makes the blank 1" longer, so a 26" order ships at 27", allowing the gunsmith to cut and crown the muzzle.
Which twist, 1:7 or 1:10?
The 1:7 twist is faster and stabilizes heavier .25 caliber bullets better. The 1:10 twist is standard on many .25 cartridges and favors the lighter bullet range. If you are building for a specific cartridge and bullet weight, choose the twist your gunsmith or the bullet manufacturer recommends.
What does 5R rifling mean, and does it matter for .25 caliber?
Bartlein offers three rifling styles, all single-point cut: 4-groove, 5R and Conventional-5. This blank is 5R. In 5R the bore has five lands, so no land sits directly opposite another, and each land meets the groove on an angle instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the bullet jacket distorts less as it enters the rifling, and quotes testing showing BC loss from jacket deformation up to 5% lower than with conventional styles.
Bartlein also says the style or number of grooves has no real bearing on accuracy or barrel life. Their one exception is light-for-caliber bullets in .224 (35 to 60 gr) and 6mm (65 to 68 gr), which do not like 5R; that exception does not apply to .25 caliber.
Why does the blank arrive an inch longer than I ordered?
Every Bartlein blank is hand lapped after rifling, and lapping can leave a slight bell mouth at both ends. Bartlein builds a minimum 1.0" muzzle cut into the blank profile so the gunsmith can remove it when cutting to length and crowning. At the breech, chambering takes the bell mouth out on a centerfire blank, so nothing extra is needed there.
What voids the Bartlein warranty?
Bartlein lists three things: fire lapping, including any compound made for it such as Tubb Dust. Any abrasive compound in the bore or on a brush, including Iosso, Witch's Brew, JB Bore Polish (red), Thorroclean, Flitz and CLR. And a brush on a drill run back and forth through the bore.
