Overview

Custom-chambered Defiance action paired with a Bartlein carbon barrel, ready for a stock

This barreled action pairs a Defiance anTi X receiver with a Bartlein carbon fiber barrel blank, both chambered, threaded and headspaced by Red Hawk Rifles. The action is made to order in short, medium or long, with four bolt faces and a choice of 75 or 90 degree bolt throw. The barrel comes in two contours and three twist rates to match your caliber and magazine pattern.

Defiance anTi X action at 23 to 24.4 oz

A short action weighs 23.0 oz complete, medium 24.0 oz and long 24.4 oz, all in 416R stainless with a 4340 chrome moly bolt. Both the integral scope rail and recoil lug are cut from the receiver body, not fastened to it.

Headspace guaranteed to +/- .001 inch

The 4340 bolt is machined in one operation and the barrel is hand fitted by us, so headspace is held action to action. You will not need to adjust it or have a gunsmith re-fit the barrel when you install it in a stock.

Bartlein 5R cut rifling in carbon fiber

5R cut rifling has five lands with a gentler side angle and no land directly opposite, which Bartlein reports reduces jacket deformation. The stainless core is wrapped in carbon fiber, keeping weight under 4 lb.

Integral 20 MOA scope rail and recoil lug

Both are part of the receiver. The rail is skeletonized and has no fasteners to re-torque. The recoil lug is cut to the receiver geometry and does not need bedding or pressure.

Cerakote finish and threaded muzzle

The entire assembly is coated with Cerakote ceramic finish for durability. The barrel is muzzle threaded to 5/8-24 TPI (1/2-28 for .223 Rem) to fit aftermarket brakes and suppressors. Includes a Meraki Machine M1 brake.

Caliber and contour built to your order

Choose short, medium or long action, one of four bolt faces for your cartridge, the #13 Varmint or #14 M24/M40 barrel contour, the barrel length from 20 to 26 inches, and the twist rate the cartridge calls for.

Fitment

Will it work with your build?

Works with

  • Remington 700 short and long action inlets (some features may need stock inlet work)
  • Medium action: industry standard medium (XM Plus) inlets
  • BDL hinged floorplate bottom metal
  • Centerfeed magazines: M5 AICS, HS Precision, Wyatt's Outdoor
  • Detachable AICS pattern magazines
  • .308 Win class cartridges and magnum cartridges to .338 Lapua (by bolt face and action length)
  • Aftermarket muzzle brakes and suppressors (5/8-24 TPI muzzle)

Will not work with

  • AW magazines (this action is cut for BDL and centerfeed only)
  • Pre-fit barrel systems (this is a custom-chambered action, not a pre-fit)

Must ship to a Federal Firearms License holder. Red Hawk Rifles transfers this receiver only to individuals or businesses in possession of a valid FFL. You pick your local FFL dealer, forward a copy of their license to Red Hawk Rifles after ordering, and complete the transfer at their counter. Dealers charge a transfer fee; that fee and compliance with local, state and federal law are between you and your dealer. Rifle barrels and barreled actions ship for a flat $14.95 per order and do not qualify for free shipping. Accuracy guarantee. Each barreled action is held to Viking Armament's sub half-MOA guarantee; it does not ship if it does not meet it. The guarantee applies to a complete rifle that is properly and professionally assembled: stock or chassis fit, bedding, bottom metal and ammunition all affect the result.

Detail

Fitting it and the fine print

Which action length, bolt face and caliber do I order?

The bolt face is determined by the case head of the cartridge you are chambering for. The action length carries the cartridge family:

  • .390" bolt face: .223 Rem, short action only.
  • .480" bolt face: .308 class cartridges (.308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, 7 SAUM). Short, medium or long action.
  • .550" bolt face: magnum cartridges (.300 WM, .300 PRC, .300 RUM, 7 PRC, 6.5 PRC, 7 SAUMs magnum). Short action (magnum and SAUM), medium action (magnum and PRC), or long action.
  • .595" bolt face: .338 Lapua, long action only.

Should I order the 75 or 90 degree bolt throw?

The 90 degree throw is the standard Remington 700 lift. The 75 degree throw lifts 15 degrees less, which matters if your build runs a low-ring setup where a 90 degree handle can contact the scope body, or if you are running the rifle fast from the shoulder and need the handle to clear your knuckles. If neither applies, the 90 degree throw is the conventional choice.

Which barrel contour, #13 or #14?

Both start at a 1.200" breech. The #13 Varmint/Sendero steps down to .950" and then tapers to an .830" muzzle, weighing 3.05 to 3.6 lb depending on length. The #14 M24/M40 tapers straight from the breech to a .900" muzzle, weighing 3.35 to 4.05 lb. The #14 is heavier and stiffer, which helps manage heat buildup during rapid fire. The #13 is lighter and will fit any stock with a varmint barrel channel. Both muzzles are large enough for a suppressor.

Which barrel length and twist should I order?

Barrel length is a balance between velocity, handling and suppressor use. Anything 22 to 26 inches is standard for most calibers. If you plan to run a suppressor, 20 to 22 inches keeps the overall length down; if you are using the brake only, 24 to 26 inches gives you velocity. The twist rate should match the bullet weights you intend to shoot. Your bullet maker will list a recommended twist range. Bartlein holds these twist rates very accurately, to the fourth decimal place.

Is this a ready-to-shoot rifle?

No. This is a barreled action: receiver, bolt, barrel, brake and coating. You still need a stock or chassis, bottom metal, trigger group and safety to complete the rifle. The scope rail is integral and needs no mounting hardware, but you will need rings, a scope, and a gunsmith to fit the barreled action to your stock (inlet and bed the action and barrel).

How long does a build take?

Standard lead time is around 14 weeks and depends on part availability. After checkout we email a build sheet to confirm every option; once the specs are confirmed and machining starts, the order cannot be changed, so check them carefully. The finished barreled action ships to the FFL dealer you choose.
