A custom rifle action at entry-level price, built like their other actions

The Defiance Misfit is a custom rifle action for shooters building their first precision rifle on a budget. The receiver is one piece of pre-hardened 416 stainless and the bolt is 4340 chrome moly machined in one operation, which is how Defiance guarantees headspace to +/- .001". It is made to order in short or long action, right or left hand, with a 90 or 75 degree bolt throw and three bolt faces.

28.1 oz complete, all steel

A short action weighs 28.1 oz and a long action 30.4 oz, and that includes the aluminum scope mount and recoil lug. Built using the same aircraft-certified materials and processes as Defiance's other actions, but streamlined to reduce costs without cutting capability.

Headspace guaranteed to +/- .001"

The 4340 chrome moly bolt is machined in one operation, so headspace is held action to action rather than fitted one at a time. Defiance states that Ruckus style pre-fit barrels work on it, with final fit-up by a gunsmith.

Integral recoil lug and aluminum scope mount

The recoil lug is cut from the receiver body. The scope mount is aluminum and integrated, so there are no rails to pin or screw on separately.

90 or 75 degree bolt throw

Order the 75 degree throw when you run low rings or cycle fast. The handle lifts 15 degrees less, which is the clearance a 90 degree bolt does not give under a scope tube.

Three bolt faces, short or long

Bolt faces of .390", .480" and .550" cover .223 Rem through magnum cartridges, across short and long action, right or left hand.

Chrome-moly bolt with anti-bind design

Recessed bolt lugs, Mini-16 extractor and plunger ejector for smooth cycling and reliable extraction. BDL magazine cutout feeds hinged floorplate, centerfeed and detachable AICS magazines.

Check your bolt face before ordering. The .390" face is .223 Rem only. The .480" face handles .308 Win and standard .308 style cartridges. The .550" face handles .300 WM, RUM, PRC and SAUM. Order the bolt face that matches the cartridge you will chamber, then order the action length that carries it.

Fitting it and the fine print

Which bolt face do I order?

The bolt face must match the cartridge case head. The Misfit comes with three choices:

  • .390" face: .223 Rem only.
  • .480" face: .308 Win and cartridges built on the .308 case head (6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win, etc.). Short or long action.
  • .550" face: .300 WM, RUM, PRC and SAUM. Short or long action.

Order the face that matches your cartridge, then order the action length you need.

Should I order the 75 degree or the 90 degree bolt throw?

The 90 degree throw is the standard Remington 700 lift. The 75 degree throw lifts the handle 15 degrees less, which matters in two builds: a competition rifle run fast from the shoulder, where a 90 degree handle can find your knuckles or the scope, and a lightweight build on low rings, where a 90 degree handle can contact the scope body. If neither applies, the 90 degree throw is the conventional choice and needs no stock or ring clearance you do not already have.

Is nitriding worth adding?

The 416 stainless receiver is corrosion resistant left bare. The 4340 chrome moly bolt is not, so the bolt is the part that benefits. Defiance's black nitride adds lubricity and surface hardness and turns the steel black without adding measurable thickness, so clearances are unchanged. Bolt-only nitride protects the part that rusts; full nitride adds the receiver for a matching black finish. Either adds to the lead time.

Can this ship to my door?

No. The Misfit is a firearm receiver and Red Hawk Rifles transfers it only to a holder of a valid Federal Firearms License. You pick the FFL dealer who will receive it, forward a copy of their license to Red Hawk Rifles after ordering, and complete the transfer at their counter. Dealers usually charge a transfer fee; that fee, and compliance with local, state and federal law, are between you and your dealer.
