Overview

Flush-fit M5 bottom metal that keeps its magazine under recoil

The Hawkins Precision Hunter DBM is a flush-mounted M5 bottom metal for Remington 700 pattern hunting rifles that run detachable magazines. It is machined from one piece of billet 6061 and uses Hawkins' patented cantilever spring release, which Hawkins rates to stay shut under heavy recoil. It comes in Short, Medium/XM+, Medium 3.500" and Long action, with pillars and action screws in the box.

Flush mounted

Sits level with an M5 inlet instead of hanging below the stock, so the rifle carries and rests like a hunting rifle while feeding AICS pattern or Hawkins Hunter flush magazines.

One piece of billet 6061

No castings and no assembled halves to work loose. Hawkins lists 2.8 oz for the short action and 3.4 oz for the long action.

Cantilever spring release

Patented, and Hawkins says it will not open under heavy recoil. The release is adjustable and sits close to the body, so catching it by accident is all but impossible.

Four action lengths

Short, Medium/XM+, Medium 3.500" and Long, each a different part. The size follows the action, not the cartridge, so check the fitment list before you order.

  • Factory-length Remington 700 and Zermatt Origin long actions without gunsmithing for magazine length
  • BDL or hinged-floorplate stocks that have not been inletted to M5

Medium 3.500" is not interchangeable. It fits Impact Precision Medium actions only, and it accepts only Hawkins 3.5 MED magazines. Order the size that matches your action, not the closest one.

Which size do I order?

Match the bottom metal to the action, not the cartridge.

  • Short action: Remington 700 short actions and short action clones.
  • Medium/XM+: Lone Peak, Zermatt, Stiller and Defiance XM+ medium actions. Hawkins states it does not fit the Defiance XM (without the plus).
  • Medium 3.500": Impact Precision Medium actions only.
  • Long action: Remington 700 long actions and long action clones.

Magazine compatibility by action length

  • Short action: Hawkins Hunter short action magazines (about 2.880" standard, 2.980" extended and magnum) or AICS pattern 5 and 10 round .308 magazines. May not work with AW magazines.
  • Medium/XM+: Hawkins Hunter MED magnum magazines, 3 rounds, about 3.210" internal.
  • Medium 3.500": Hawkins 3.5 MED magazines only, magnum (3 rounds) or standard (4 rounds), about 3.400" internal.
  • Long action: Hawkins Hunter long action flush magazines, about 3.770" internal. Will not work with CIP length AICS, MDT or Accurate magazines.

Will it drop into a factory Remington 700?

A short action in an M5 inlet stock does. Two cases need a gunsmith, both stated by Hawkins:

  • Long action: factory-length Remington 700 and Zermatt Origin long actions need gunsmithing to clear the long action magazine's cartridge overall length.
  • Short action 2.980" magazines: these have no binder plate, so a Remington 700 may need machine work below the feed ramp to keep bullets from catching. Custom actions mostly do not.

A BDL or hinged-floorplate stock has to be inletted to M5 before any Hunter DBM will fit.
