Overview
Billet M5 bottom metal for AICS magazines, with a barricade stop built in
The Hawkins Precision M5 DBM is a billet aluminum AICS pattern bottom metal for Remington 700 and clone actions in a stock with an M5 inlet. The barricade stop is machined into the front of the magazine well, the port is drafted for fast changes, and the patented cantilever spring release is rated by Hawkins to stay shut under recoil. It comes in four lengths, with bedding pillars and action screws in the box.
Barricade stop, drafted port
Both are machined into the magazine well itself. The stop gives the rifle a hard rest ahead of the magazine on a barricade, and the drafted port guides the magazine in on a fast change.
Cantilever spring release
Patented, and Hawkins states it will not open under recoil. Standard AICS, Accurate and MDT magazines seat on the 1.20" latch; AW magazines use the 1.25" long latch.
Four lengths
Short action, short action with the long magazine latch, long action 3.715" for AICS long action magazines, and long action 3.850" for Accurate and MDT 3.850" magazines.
5.18 oz short action
Hawkins' weight chart lists 5.18 oz for the short action and 7.33 oz for the 3.715" long action, machined from one piece of billet aluminum.
Pillars and screws included
Bedding pillars and action screws ship in the box. Hawkins recommends 55 in-lbs on the action screws unless your stock maker says otherwise.

Match the long action to the magazine, not the cartridge name. The 3.715" unit runs AICS long action magazines. The 3.850" unit runs Accurate and MDT magazines with a 3.850" outside length. They are not interchangeable, and both need a long action stock inlet cut for M5. Medium and XM+ action sizes are not offered in this listing; Hawkins makes them as separate sizes.

Fitting it and the fine print
Which length do I order?
Match the bottom metal to the action, then to the magazine you plan to run.
- Short action: Remington 700 short actions and short action clones running AICS pattern magazines (AICS, Accurate, MDT). Standard 1.20" latch.
- Short action (long magazine latch): the same body with Hawkins' 1.25" latch. Order this one for AW magazines (the action must be cut for AW), for .223-based cartridges in Accurate or MDT 223 magazines, or for a 22LR such as a Vudoo. The taller latch holds the magazine higher in the well for feeding.
- Long action (3.715"): Remington 700 long actions and clones running AICS long action magazines: 300 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag, 30-06, 280 AI and similar.
- Long action CIP (3.850"): long actions running Accurate .338 Lapua or 300 RUM magazines, or MDT 3.850" magazines. The 3.850" is the magazine's outside length; internal length is 3.750" Accurate and 3.760" MDT.
Medium-length actions and the Defiance XM take Hawkins' Medium/XM+ and XM units, which are not part of this listing.
Will it work with AW magazines?
On the short action only, and only if the action is cut for AW magazines. Hawkins' instruction is to run the long latch configuration, so order the Short Action (Long Magazine Latch) option. The long latch is 1.25" against the standard 1.20", which lifts the magazine to the feed position an AW magazine needs.
Can I change the latch later?
Yes. Hawkins sells the M5 DBM short and long latches as complete units (latch, spring, screws and a new roll pin). Punch out the old roll pin, fit the new latch, and the unit converts between the standard and AW configurations. Hawkins asks that the latch not be modified by hand; swap it for the other length instead.
Will it fit my stock?
Only if the stock has an M5 inlet. The M5 pocket is larger than a Remington 700 BDL hinged-floorplate inlet to make room for the magazine, so the M5 DBM will not drop into a factory BDL stock. Once it is in, Hawkins recommends 55 in-lbs on the action screws unless the stock manufacturer specifies otherwise.
