Overview

A cut-rifled .22 centerfire match blank for a gunsmith to chamber and crown

The Bartlein .22 caliber stainless barrel blank is a single-point cut rifled 5R match blank for a gunsmith to chamber, thread and crown for your bolt action. It is offered in eight contours, four twist rates, and 26" or 28" lengths by contour. Any .22 centerfire cartridge can be chambered in it, from .223 Rem to .22-250.

Single-point cut rifled and hand lapped

Bartlein uses single-point cut rifling only, never a button, and hand laps every blank when it is finished. The .219" bore and .224" groove are Bartlein's standard .22 centerfire dimensions.

5R rifling, five lands

Five lands means no land sits directly opposite another, and the land sides are angled instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the jacket distorts less on the jump into the rifling, and rates 5R at up to 5% less BC loss from jacket deformation.

Eight contours from Sporter to Match

Choose from the #3 Heavy Sporter, #4 Bull Sporter, #7 MTU Straight Taper, #11 Medium Palma, #12 Heavy Palma, #13 Varmint/Sendero, #14 M24/M40, or the 1.25" Straight Cylinder. Other contours are available to order.

Four twists: 1:6.5, 1:7, 1:7.7 and 1:12

Pick the twist for the bullets you plan to run and the cartridge you chamber. Heavier bullets and higher velocities need faster (lower ratio) twists; lighter bullets and lower velocities favour slower twists.

Ships 1" longer than the length you order

Bartlein makes every blank 1" over the chart length so the gunsmith can cut the bell mouth off the muzzle and crown it. Lengths on this page are 26" or 28" finished.

5R not recommended for light-for-caliber bullets

Bartlein notes that 5R does not work well with lightweight .22 bullets under 60 grains. If you plan to shoot 35 to 60 gr bullets, Bartlein can provide a conventional or 4-groove blank instead; contact them to order.

Fitment

Will it work with your build?

Works with

  • .22 centerfire cartridges: .223 Rem, .22-250, .220 Swift, .224 Valkyrie (our record)
  • Bolt action rifles, once a gunsmith has chambered, threaded, crowned and fitted it
  • Suppressors on contours with 0.700" muzzle diameter or larger (#4, #7, #11, #12, #13, #14, Straight Cylinder)
  • Muzzle threads of 1/2x28, 5/8x24 or 3/4x24, cut by your gunsmith

Will not work with

  • Any rifle as shipped: this is a blank, not a pre-fit or drop-in barrel
  • Pre-fit or gas gun installs: Bartlein makes no pre-fit or gas gun barrels
  • Light-for-caliber bullets under 60 grains with 5R rifling (Bartlein recommends conventional rifling for 35 to 60 gr bullets)

Gunsmith fitting and a flat shipping charge. This blank must be chambered, threaded, crowned and installed by a certified gunsmith. Rifle barrels and barreled actions ship for a flat $14.95 per order regardless of quantity and do not qualify for free shipping.

Detail

Fitting it and the fine print

Which contour do I order?

Match the contour to the barrel channel of your stock or chassis and to the weight you want to carry. A heavier barrel resists moving as it heats, but that is mostly a button-rifled problem; cut rifling puts no stress into the blank, so a lighter Bartlein contour gives up less than you would expect. For a suppressor, Bartlein recommends a muzzle of 0.700" or more, which is the #4 Bull Sporter and up, and prefers a Palma or heavier. Other contours are available to order.

Which twist rate do I order?

Your choice of cartridge and bullet weight determines the twist you need. Heavier bullets and higher velocities need faster (lower ratio) twists; lighter bullets and lower velocities favour slower twists. The 1:7.7 and 1:7 are the most common for .223 Rem and .22-250 across a range of bullet weights. The 1:6.5 favours the heaviest .224 projectiles. The 1:12 works for the lightest bullets in low-velocity loads, but Bartlein notes that 5R does not work well with lightweight bullets under 60 grains, and recommends asking for conventional rifling if you shoot 35 to 60 gr.

What does 5R rifling mean?

Bartlein offers three rifling styles: 4-groove, 5R and Conventional-5, all single-point cut. This blank is 5R. In 5R the bore has five lands, so no land sits directly opposite another, and each land meets the groove on an angle instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the bullet jacket distorts less as it enters the rifling, and quotes testing that puts BC loss from jacket deformation up to 5% lower. For .22 barrels, Bartlein's one exception is light-for-caliber bullets under 60 grains in .224 (35 to 60 gr), which they say do not like 5R; contact them to order conventional rifling if that is your load.
