Overview

A cut-rifled 7mm match blank in 1:8 or 1:9 twist and nine contours

The Bartlein .284 (7mm) stainless barrel blank is a 5R single-point cut rifled match blank for a gunsmith to chamber, thread and crown for your bolt action. It is offered in nine Bartlein contours at 26" finished length, in 1:8 or 1:9 twist. Any cartridge on the 7mm bore can be chambered in it, from 7mm-08 Rem, .284 Win and 7 PRC to 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm WSM and 7mm RUM.

Single-point cut rifled and hand lapped

Bartlein uses single-point cut rifling only, never button rifling, and hand laps every blank when it is finished. The .277" bore and .284" groove are Bartlein's standard 7mm dimensions.

5R rifling, five lands

Five lands means no land sits directly opposite another, and the land sides are angled instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the jacket deforms less on the jump into the rifling, and rates 5R at up to 5% less BC loss from jacket deformation.

Two twists: 1:8 and 1:9

Every contour on this page is offered in both twists except the #2B Medium Sporter, which is 1:9 only. Pick the twist for the bullets you plan to run.

Nine contours, 3.60 lb to 6.9 lb

From the #2B Medium Sporter at 0.630" muzzle and 3.60 lb, through the #3, #3B, #4, #13 Varmint, #14 M24/M40 and the #11 and #12 Palmas, to the #7 MTU at 0.930" muzzle and 6.9 lb. Weights are Bartlein's at chart length.

Ships 1" longer than 26"

Bartlein makes every blank 1" over the finished length so the gunsmith can cut the bell mouth off the muzzle and crown it. Every blank on this page is 26" finished, so it arrives at 27".

Suppressor muzzle diameter

Bartlein recommends a 0.700" muzzle minimum under a suppressor. Every contour here meets it except the #2B (0.630") and #3 (0.670").

Fitment

Will it work with your build?

Works with

  • Every 7mm (.284) cartridge: 7mm-08 Rem, .284 Win, 7 PRC, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm WSM, 7mm RUM
  • Bolt action rifles, once a gunsmith has chambered, threaded, crowned and fitted it
  • Suppressors on the #3B and heavier contours (0.700" muzzle or larger)
  • Muzzle threads of 1/2x28, 5/8x24 or 3/4x24, cut by your gunsmith

Will not work with

  • Any rifle as shipped: this is a blank, not a pre-fit or drop-in barrel
  • Pre-fit or drop-in installs: Bartlein makes no pre-fit or gas gun barrels

Gunsmith fitting and a flat shipping charge. This blank must be chambered, threaded, crowned and installed by a certified gunsmith. Rifle barrels and barreled actions ship for a flat $14.95 per order regardless of quantity and do not qualify for free shipping.

Detail

Fitting it and the fine print

Which contour and twist do I order?

Match the contour to the barrel channel of your stock or chassis and to the weight you want to carry. Breech diameter is 1.200" on the #2B, #3, #3B, #4 and #14, and 1.250" on the #7, #11, #12 and #13; your gunsmith turns the shank to fit the action. Bartlein's view is that a heavier contour resists walking as it heats, but with cut rifling the contour matters less than it does on a button-rifled barrel, and they have seen lighter contours shoot as well or better. For a suppressor, Bartlein recommends a muzzle of 0.700" or more, which is the #3B and up.

Every blank here is 26" finished. Bartlein's chart length is 24" for the #2B and 30" for the two Palmas; those are Bartlein modifications of the contour, which Bartlein allows. Twist is 1:8 or 1:9 on every contour except the #2B, which is 1:9 only. Bartlein publishes no twist-by-bullet table, so choose the twist for the bullets you intend to shoot. Other contours are available to order.

What does 5R rifling mean, and does it matter for 7mm?

Bartlein offers three rifling styles: 4-groove, 5R and Conventional-5, all single-point cut. This blank is 5R. In 5R the bore has five lands, so no land sits directly opposite another, and each land meets the groove on an angle instead of the 90 degree corner of conventional rifling. Bartlein says the bullet jacket deforms less as it enters the rifling, and quotes testing that puts BC loss from jacket deformation up to 5% lower.

Bartlein also says the style or number of grooves has no real bearing on accuracy or barrel life. Their one exception is light-for-caliber, short-jacket bullets in .224 (35 to 60 gr) and 6mm (65 to 68 gr), which they say do not like 5R; that exception does not cover 7mm bullets.

Why does the blank arrive an inch longer than 26"?

Every Bartlein blank is hand lapped after rifling, and lapping can leave a slight bell mouth at both ends. Bartlein builds a minimum 1.0" muzzle cut into the blank profile so the gunsmith can remove it when cutting to length and crowning, which is why a 26" blank arrives at 27". At the breech, chambering takes the bell mouth out on a centerfire blank, so nothing extra is needed there.

What voids the Bartlein warranty?

Bartlein lists three things. Fire lapping, including any compound made for it such as Tubb Dust. Any abrasive compound in the bore or on a brush, including Iosso, Witch's Brew, JB Bore Polish (red), Thorroclean, Flitz and CLR. And a brush on a drill run back and forth through the bore.
