M5 hinged floorplate bottom metal for hunting rifles

The Hawkins Precision M5 Oberndorf is a BDL-style hinged floorplate for Remington 700 hunting rifles with M5 inlets and extended-length box magazines. It is CNC machined from a single piece and features a reversible, adjustable floorplate catch with a thicker spring to reduce wear under high-recoil cartridges. It comes in Short, Medium, and Long action, with action screws and aluminum pillars in the box.

BDL-style hinged floorplate

A traditional drop-box design, unlike the flush-mounted detachable bottom metals, so it carries the weight of a hunting rifle and uses the magazine angle shooters know.

Single-piece CNC machined

Lightweight and rigid. Hawkins lists 3.3 oz for the short action and 3.8 oz for the long action.

Reversible and adjustable catch

The mag/floorplate catch is reversible for either hand and adjustable, so you can tune how tight the magazine sits.

Thicker floorplate

The thicker spring system reduces wear and adds reliability when loading 3 Ultra mag cartridges under recoil, and provides less initial spring pressure for easier cycling.

Verify your action is cut for extended-length box magazines. The M5 Oberndorf is designed for Wyatt extended-length boxes. If your action was inletted for standard magazine boxes, this bottom metal will not feed correctly. Contact Hawkins Precision or your stockmaker to confirm your action's magazine length.

Which size do I order?

Match the bottom metal to the action, not the cartridge.

  • Short action: Remington 700 short actions and short action clones, with extended-length short action magazines.
  • Medium: Lone Peak, Zermatt, Stiller and Defiance XM+ medium actions. Hawkins states the medium unit does not fit Defiance XM without the plus.
  • Long action: Remington 700 long actions and long action clones, with extended-length long action magazines for cartridges like .300 Win Mag and larger.

What is the difference between Extended and Standard Magazine Box variants?

The Hawkins Precision M5 Oberndorf is designed for extended-length Wyatt box magazines. Red Hawk Rifles offers both Extended Magazine Box and Standard Magazine Box variants in this product, but the manufacturer specification calls for extended-length boxes. If your stock is inletted for standard magazine boxes, you must contact Hawkins Precision or your stockmaker to verify that the longer magazine will work in your stock's magazine well.

Will this fit my factory Remington 700?

Only if your stock has an M5 inlet and was cut for extended-length magazines. A stock with a standard BDL inlet cannot use this bottom metal. A stock with an M5 inlet but cut for standard (not extended) magazine boxes may have clearance issues with the longer magazine. Contact your stockmaker or Hawkins Precision to confirm before ordering.
