Overview

Four-port brake with rearward geometry and self-timing collar

The Hawkins Precision Backdraft is a four-port muzzle brake with rearward port geometry to increase recoil reduction for heavy hitting cartridges. The .990 inch outside diameter version includes a self-timing locking collar so you can install it and lock it down to time on the barrel the same way every time. A 3/8 inch hex opening takes a torque wrench, and Hawkins recommends 65 to 100 in-lbs for consistent torque.

Rearward port geometry

The four rearward-facing ports increase recoil reduction for heavy hitting cartridges. Hawkins describes it as Tank ST geometry turned up.

Self-timing locking collar

Available on the standard .990 inch outside diameter models only. Lock it down after install so the brake times on the barrel the same way every time it is installed.

3/8 inch hex, 65 to 100 in-lb torque

A 3/8 inch hex bit opening up front and a recommended torque range of 65 to 100 in-lbs. With the collar locked, Hawkins says this gives minimal to no point of impact shift when you remove and reinstall the brake.

Three outside diameters, two calibers

Standard .990 inch and smaller .875 inch and .750 inch options, in .264 (6.5mm) and .30 caliber. The .875 and .750 inch versions do not have locking collars due to material constraints.

Fitment

Will it work with your build?

Works with

  • Barrels threaded 5/8-24 TPI (.990 and .875 inch OD)
  • Barrels threaded 1/2-28 TPI (.750 inch OD)
  • Calibers: .264 (6.5mm) and .30

Will not work with

  • Barrels with other thread pitches
  • Bores other than .264 and .30

Order by outside diameter and caliber. The .990 inch and .875 inch OD versions are both 5/8-24 TPI. The .750 inch OD is 1/2-28 TPI. Only the .990 inch OD includes a locking collar.

Detail

Fitting it and the fine print

What is the difference between the .990, .875 and .750 inch outside diameter versions?

The .990 inch and .875 inch OD versions are both 5/8-24 TPI threads. The .750 inch OD is 1/2-28 TPI. Only the .990 inch OD includes the self-timing locking collar; the .875 and .750 inch versions do not have collars due to material constraints.

How do I install and time the brake?

Use a 3/8 inch hex bit to torque the brake onto your barrel at 65 to 100 in-lbs per Hawkins. If you have the .990 inch OD model with the locking collar, lock down the collar after install so the brake times on the barrel the same way every time you remove and reinstall it.

Will removing and reinstalling the brake shift my point of impact?

Hawkins says that with the collar locked and consistent 65 to 100 in-lb torque, you will see minimal to no point of impact shift when removing and reinstalling the brake.
