Overview

An all-steel custom action at titanium weight, with the rail and recoil lug built in

The Defiance anTi X is an all-steel custom rifle action with an integral scope rail and recoil lug, weighing 23.0 oz in short action. The receiver is one piece of pre-hardened 416R stainless and the bolt is 4340 chrome moly machined in one operation, which is how Defiance guarantees headspace to +/- .001". It is made to order in short, medium and long action, right or left hand, with a 90 or 75 degree bolt throw and four bolt faces.

23.0 oz, all steel

A short action weighs 23.0 oz complete, medium 24.0 oz and long 24.4 oz, and that includes the scope rail and recoil lug because both are part of the receiver. Defiance rates it against titanium actions on weight, without the shorter wear life Defiance attributes to titanium.

Headspace guaranteed to +/- .001"

The 4340 chrome moly bolt is machined in one operation, so headspace is held action to action rather than fitted one at a time. Defiance states that Ruckus style pre-fit barrels work on it, with final fit-up by a gunsmith.

Integral 20 MOA rail and recoil lug

Both are cut from the receiver body, not pinned or screwed to it. The rail is skeletonized to take the weight out, and there are no rail screws to re-torque.

90 or 75 degree bolt throw

Order the 75 degree throw when you run low rings or cycle fast: the handle lifts 15 degrees less, which is the clearance a 90 degree bolt does not give under a scope tube.

Four bolt faces, three lengths

Bolt faces of .390", .480", .550" and .595" cover .223 Rem through .338 Lapua, across short, medium (industry standard medium, formerly XM Plus) and long action, right or left hand.

.700" bolt body, .002" clearance

The bolt body runs .002" clearance in battery and is relieved to .003" through the center, so it still cycles with grit in the raceway. Lug ways are wire EDM cut full length with an anti-bind design.

Fitment

Will it work with your build?

Works with

  • Remington 700 short and long action inlets (Defiance notes some features may need inlet work)
  • Medium action: industry standard medium (XM Plus) inlets
  • BDL hinged floorplate bottom metal
  • Centerfeed magazines: M5 AICS, HS Precision, Wyatt's Outdoor
  • Detachable AICS magazines
  • Ruckus style pre-fit barrels with a 1.0625" x 16 TPI tenon

Will not work with

  • AW magazines (this action is cut for BDL and centerfeed only)
  • .300 WM and other magnum cartridges in a RUM/PRC receiver

.550 MAG and .550 RUM/PRC are different receivers. They share the same bolt body, but the RUM/PRC receiver is cut to feed the RUM and PRC case through a BDL assembly, and it will not work with magnum cartridges such as .300 WM. Order the receiver for the cartridge, not just the bolt face.

Detail

Fitting it and the fine print

Which bolt face and action length do I order?

Pick the bolt face by the case head of the cartridge you will chamber, then the action length that carries it:

  • .390": .223 Rem. Short action.
  • .480": standard .308 style bolt face, for .308 Win and cartridges built on its case head. Short, medium or long action.
  • .550": .300 WM, RUM, PRC and SAUM. Short action (MAG/SAUM/PRC), medium action (MAG/PRC), or long action as either a MAG receiver or a RUM/PRC receiver. Read the note above before choosing between the two long action receivers.
  • .595": .338 Lapua. Long action.

A bolt with a different face can be ordered from Defiance for an existing action later, but Defiance needs the serial number to confirm the magazine cut matches the cartridge, and the receiver goes back to them for fit-up.

Should I order the 75 degree or the 90 degree bolt throw?

The 90 degree throw is the standard Remington 700 lift. The 75 degree throw lifts the handle 15 degrees less, which matters in two builds: a competition rifle run fast from the shoulder, where a 90 degree handle can find your knuckles or the scope, and a weight build on low rings, where a 90 degree handle can contact the scope body. If neither applies, the 90 degree throw is the conventional choice and needs no stock or ring clearance you do not already have.

Is nitriding worth adding?

The 416R receiver is corrosion resistant left bare. The 4340 chrome moly bolt is not, so the bolt is the part that benefits. Defiance's black nitride adds lubricity and surface hardness and turns the steel black without adding measurable thickness, so clearances are unchanged. Bolt-only nitride protects the part that rusts; full nitride adds the receiver for a matching black finish. Either adds to the lead time.

Can this ship to my door?

No. The anTi X is a firearm receiver and Red Hawk Rifles transfers it only to a holder of a valid Federal Firearms License. You pick the FFL dealer who will receive it, forward a copy of their license to Red Hawk Rifles after ordering, and complete the transfer at their counter. Dealers usually charge a transfer fee; that fee, and compliance with local, state and federal law, are between you and your dealer.
